Preston County Deputies arrested a man after a vehicle chase.
On June 27, deputies said they saw a Polaris Razor driving west on Route 7 in the eastbound lane. A deputy followed the vehicle and saw it cross the center line several times, according to the sheriff’s office.
A deputy turned on his lights and siren, but the driver accelerated and refused to stop, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies said the vehicle went west on Route 7 and turned onto Indian Rock Road. While on Indian Rock Road, the driver nearly hit a vehicle that was traveling toward him, according to the sheriff’s office.
The driver then turned onto Gamble Hollow Road, where his vehicle crashed, deputies said. A deputy could smell a strong odor of alcohol on the driver, Austin Newsome, 21, of Kingwood, according to the sheriff’s office. A deputy administered three sobriety tests on Newsome at the sheriff’s office, where he showed signs of impairment, deputies said. Newsome twice refused to take a breathalyzer test, according to the sheriff’s office.
Newsome is charged with fleeing while DUI and fleeing with reckless indifference. He is in Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
