A Marion County woman was arrested on child neglect charges on Tuesday, after officers said she was under the influence of drugs around her two children and was screaming that ‘spiders were crawling on her.’
Officers with the Fairmont Police Department were dispatched to a wellbeing check on a female that was inside of a vehicle. Officers said the caller who reported the incident witnessed a woman exit a silver car while screaming that spiders were crawling on her. Additionally, the caller said they witnessed the woman walking in the area with two young children, before entering a silver Kia Sorento, according to police.
Upon arrival on scene, officers said they located the reported vehicle traveling south on Haymond Street towards the Gateway Connector. Officers said they made a frontal stop on the vehicle and approached the woman, who was later identified as Nicole Coakley, 30, of Fairmont.
Officers said that while approaching the vehicle, they witnessed the two children in the backseat attempting to crawl in the front seat, neither of which were secured by a safety restraint. Police said that it was determined that the two children in the vehicle were Coakley’s.
According to police, Coakley began yelling and acting irrationally, and was then asked to step out of the vehicle. Officers said Coakley then stated that she would not exit the vehicle, and with the car still in drive, began pulling the vehicle forward. Coakley then stopped the vehicle suddenly, before being asked by officers to exit the vehicle again, to which she complied.
Officers said that while speaking with Coakley, they noticed she had a hard time standing still and following directions. Coakley was then asked to perform multiple drug impairment tests and showed impairment in all of the tests that were performed, according to police. Coakley admitted to police to using suboxone, a drug commonly used by those with drug addiction, earlier in the day. Coakley also admitted to using methamphetamine “a few days ago,” according to police.
Coakley has been charged with child neglect and is currently being held at North Central Regional Jail.
