A Shinnston man has become the fifth person to be arrested for his involvement in the murder of a Fairmont man in September of 2018.
Charles Carpenter, 38, of Shinnston has been arrested for his involvement in the murder of Luka Grabb, deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department said. According to deputies, at least five men were present at a residence on 35 Dally Drive in Fairmont on the night of September 24 and through the morning hours of September 25. Deputies said these five men were James Vincent, 30; Russell Kirk, 36; David Uphold, 34; Vernon Capenter, 41, and Charles Carpenter, 38.
According to deputies, Kirk received a recording of Grabb discussing his plan to rob Vincent. Deputies said Vincent invited Grabb to his residence on the night of September 24, which resulted in a physical altercation. Vincent, Kirk and Uphold were involved in the altercation with Grabb, deputies said. At some point during the altercation with Grabb, Vincent pulled out a gun and shot Grabb multiple times, according to deputies.
Charles Carpenter told deputies that he knew someone was going to be confronted at Vincent’s residence, but that he was unaware of the details at the time. Charles Carpenter also told deputies that after Grabb was shot, he was directed by Vincent to remove Grabb from the scene.
According to deputies, Charles Carpenter said he and Vernon Carpenter, who was driving, took Grabb to Pinchgut Hollow Road in Fairmont. Deputies said the men removed Grabb from the vehicle and placed him on the roadside. Deputies said that at the time Grabb was left on the roadside, he was still alive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, which he later died from.
Vincent has been charged with first degree murder. Kirk, Uphold, Vernon Carpenter and Charles Carpenter have each been charged with accessory before the fact of murder.
