A Barbour County man was arrested on a child abuse charge on Thursday for a November 2018 incident with a juvenile girl.
Deputies with the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department said that on November 26, 2018, a relative of a female child disclosed to deputies that Eric Murphy, 26, of Philippi, physically abused the girl. The relative told deputies that Murphy hit the girl with a brush, and then grabbed her by the arms and slung her into the bathroom door from the bathtub.
According to deputies, the girl was immediately taken to Broaddus Hospital where a physical exam was conducted. Deputies said they observed marks of physical abuse on the child and confirmed the allegations of physical abuse in photos taken by Broaddus Hospital.
On January 14, 2018, a Child Advocacy Center (CAC) interview was conducted and confirmed the relative’s statement regarding the November 2018 incident. Deputies said the relative also said that Murphy physically abused the girl in the bathtub.
Based on the statements from the relative, photos and the CAC interview, Murphy was charged with child abuse.
