Morgantown Police arrested a man after witnessing him physically abusing a dog on Tuesday.

Nathan Steve, 24, of Virginia, was arrested for animal cruelty in Morgantown. According to police, officers responded to a home on Jones Avenue in Morgantown after receiving a complaint about a dog being abused.

When officers arrived on the scene, they could hear the dog yelping as they drove down the street outside of the residence.

As officers approached the residence, they witnessed Steve holding the dog in the air and swinging the dog around. According to police, while Steve was doing this, he had one hand on the dog’s paws and the other in the dog’s mouth. Police said that it did not appear that Steve was being bitten by the dog; rather he was using the lower jaw of the dog to aid in lifting it off of the ground.

When officers asked Steve what caused him to use this level of physical force on the dog, Steve responded that the dog had used the bathroom on the floor.

Police observed the dog to be limping on his front leg. According to police, the dog appeared to be trying to protect this leg, often times licking that paw and curling the paw underneath his body while lying down. Officers could also see blood on both of the dog’s paws.
