Shadyside Police say a dog attacked its owner, causing significant injuries.

Police say 61-year-old James Mann of Grand Avenue was eating last night and discovered his dog, a small male Australian Shepherd, had gotten into the trash nearby.

Police say Mann reached out with a paper plate, to tap the dog on the forehead to make it get out of the trash.

At that point, police say, the dog began biting his owner, leaving bite marks all over his body.

They say the most serious injuries were to his forearms.

Police say the man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital by Med Evac helicopter, which landed at the former Shadyside Stamping Plant.

Officials at the Belmont County Animal Shelter confirm they have the dog at the shelter, where he is in quarantine for 10 days for observation.

They say the dog has caused “no problems” at the shelter.
