Dominion Energy provides driving tips

Dominion Energy explained how it’s driving tips can help everyone on the road.

Driving plays a key role for employees at Dominion Energy. The company spans across 6 states and has more than 1,000 vehicles on the road every day.

“About 60 percent of our preventable motor vehicle accidents are backing and misjudged clearances,” said Tom Ponceroff, safety manager at Dominion Energy.

Whether you are driving to or from work, Dominion Energy said its mission is to safely return employees home to their families, and that is why employees receive driving training throughout the year.

“Every quarter we do a driver, safety related, hands-on exercise.  For example, in this quarter, right in this month actually, we are doing it where we talk about training associated with backing and blind-spots,’ explained Ponceroff.

Dominion explained why the training is important for everyone.

“You could hit objects. You could hit children. You could hit animals and pets,” added Ponceroff.

Dominion Energy suggests a motto that every one can learn from,”Circle for Safety”. Start by taking a lap around your vehicle, checking for objects before you even make it to the front seat of your car.

Another motto is “Buddy Backing.”

“You want to stand to the side, and I kind of crack my window, so I can have audible instructions if necessary, and I can see you in my side view mirror.  But you don’t want to stand directly behind the vehicle in case I make a mistake and step on the gas when I didn’t expect to,” explained Ponceroff.

Dominion said that even with technology and back-up cameras, it’s still important to always be aware of your surroundings.
