Davis Health System in Elkins is leading the way in elderly patient care with the help of the NICHE program.
NICHE, Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders, is designed to improve geriatric care in healthcare organizations, and, according to officials, Davis Health System has the highest ranking in the state. In 2016, 37% of patients admitted to Davis Medical Center had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and healthcare workers want to improve their quality of life.
“Ten thousand people a day turn 65 in this country. It’s extremely important for us to be ready and be able to give those patients that come to us patient center care,” said NICHE Coordinator Kim Haher.
In partnership with the Davis Health System Foundation, the NICHE task force works to improve nutrition, develop life skills, and teach better health habits for the community’s elderly.
