Energy Express works to prevent “summer slide”

Preventing the “summer slide” is the mission of one summer camp.

Energy Express is a summer reading, nutrition, and enrichment program that uses AmeriCorps mentors to provide kids with instruction all summer long.  In Doddridge County, more than 35 students attend the Energy Express program regularly.

Mentors said the program allows kids to keep improving on classroom skills, even though school is out.  One mentor said many of her students really learn from incorporating art into activities.

“My kids absolutely love art.  I have a very creative bunch.  We made this huge family quilt in the room, and it and it takes up most of the wall, and they just love doing anything with paint,” said mentor Faith Winklemann.

Kids at Energy Express also receive a lot of one-on-one instruction to help with reading skills.
