3 firefighters injured while responding to accident in Monongalia County

CHEAT LAKE, W.Va. - Three firefighters were injured after their truck was struck by multiple vehicles while responding to an accident in Monongalia County.

Cheat Lake Fire Chief Jason Christopher said his department was dispatched to a rollover accident on Interstate 68 near mile marker 10 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Sunday. When the crew attempted to turn around in the median to access the accident in the eastbound lanes, they were struck by a car that attempted to pass the truck on the left shoulder. After the car struck the truck, a box truck struck the right rear of the truck, also, Christopher said.

Christopher said the truck had its emergency lights and siren activated when it was struck.

Three firefighters were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, Christopher said, and were released later Sunday evening.

The truck sustained severe damage to the equipment storage compartments, Christopher said, and will be out of service for a lengthy period of time.
