A U.S. Marine, from Fairmont, is part of a team that is helping the Northern Mariana Islands recover from the damage done by a super typhoon last month.

Sgt. Shawn Crosby, a combat engineer, is a member of the Combat Logistics Battalion 31, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is based out of Okinawa.

Crosby’s unit is deployed to the island of Tinian, which was devastated by Super Typhoon Yutu on Oct. 25.  The unit arrived on the island in late October after island officials and FEMA requested help.  The typhoon is the largest one to ever hit a U.S. Territory, officials said.

In one photo, released by the Department of Defense, Crosby is seen using a chainsaw to cut up downed trees at a school, while in another, he is seen visiting with a six-month-old boy who lives on the island.  You can see more of what Crosby’s unit is doing here.

Crosby is a 2011 graduate of East Fairmont High School and has been in the Marines since.
