Grand jury returns indictment against murder suspect

UPDATE 10/4/2018 @ 4:30 p.m.:  The latest session of the grand jury in Greenbrier County has 64 indictments.  The list was released on Thursday afternoon.  

Among those who were indicted was Carl Wayne Rich.  He is accused of killing Jay Booth in June and was indicted for Murder. 

Arraignments for those who were indicted are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 22, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. in front of Judge Jennifer Dent and Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018 at 9 a.m. in front of Judge Robert Richardson.


UPDATE 6/27/2018 @ 5:00 p.m.: A man accused of murder in Greenbrier County faced a judge Wednesday, June 27, 2018.

Carl Rich is accused of killing Jay Booth at a home in Crichton on June 5, 2018.

According to police, Rich shot Booth with a compound hunting bow. Booth later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Magistrate Judge Kimberly Johnson found probable cause in the case, it will now move to the Grand Jury.


UPDATE 6/6/2018 @ 7:00 P.M.: West Virginia State Trooper J. W Gilkeson, said when law enforcement arrived on scene the victim was responsive and able to answer crucial questions to the investigation.

“He [Booth] was able to identify the suspect, or the person that shot him. That subject was later located,” Gilkeson said. 

Troopers said narcotic use was suspected after recovering Meth from the scene.

 As the investigation continues troopers believe Rich could be facing more charges. They also say several other people could face charges related to the case

UPDATE 6/6/2018 @ 12:45 p.m.:  According to the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority, Carl Rich is facing a charge of first degree murder in the death of Jay Booth.  

Harold Bailes, who was initially taken into custody in the case was released.  No charges have been filed against him in the investigation.


UPDATE 6/6/2018 @ 12:34 a.m.:  A man wanted in a murder investigation in Greenbrier County has been captured.

Carl Rich was found early Wednesday morning in the Charmco area of Greenbrier County. 

Troopers were searching for Rich after a man was reportedly shot at a home in Crichton on Tuesday, June 5 around 5 p.m. 

Investigators believe an argument over a missing cell phone turned violent between several men. Witnesses at the scene reportedly told police that Carl Rich shot Jay Booth with a compound hunting bow. Booth was taken to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, where he later died. 

Another suspect, Harold Bailes, has also been found and arrested in connection to the incident. 

No word on Bailes or Rich’s charges at this time.

ORIGINAL 6/5/2018 @ 11:30 p.m.:Troopers with the Rainelle detachment of West Virginia State Police are searching for a suspect in connection to a murder in Greenbrier County.

Police said they responded to reports of a man being shot at home in Crichton on Tuesday, June 5 around 5 p.m. 

Investigators believe an argument over a missing cell phone turned violent between several men. Witnesses at the scene reportedly told police that Carl Rich shot Jay Booth with a compound hunting bow. Booth was taken to Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, where he later died. 

Police are now searching for Rich in connection to the incident. They said he is known to be in a blue 2010 Toyota Corolla with Ohio license plate MET9836, or a black Toyota four-door pickup with a camper top. 

Another suspect, Harold Bailes, has also been found and arrested in connection to the incident.
