AAA holds free vin etching event to prevent theft

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - The Bridgeport AAA office held a free vin etching event Tuesday morning.

Employees scanned the vehicle identification number, made a stencil and then etched each piece of glass using a mild acid.

"We put the etching around all the windows in the car," said J.J. Miller, AAA safety adviser. "A thief would look for that, a professional thief and if they see that VIN etching the most expensive thing to replace on an automobile is the glass and they know they can't do that so they're going to bypass their car and maybe go to yours."

AAA officials said car owners are taking an active step against auto thieves.
