Harrison County Prevention Partnership evaluates underage drinking problem

One group said data revealed that alcohol abuse is the biggest issue the community has been facing.

The Harrison County Prevention Partnership evaluated national, state and county assessments to determine that alcohol is the number one drug of use in Harrison County.

The group then took the data and formed a “problem statement” focused around underage drinking.

The group said that some parents believe that underage drinking is acceptable and is a right of passage.

“We talked about social norms and that it is culturally acceptable in our county to have alcohol at most of our events and also about peer pressure so we took it one step further as to why and why here,” said Joanne McNemar with the Harrison County Prevention Partnership.

At the meeting in April, the Prevention Partnership plans to start implementing strategies to combat underage drinking.
