A local internet celebrity is celebrating her 100th birthday.

Clarksburg-native Arlene Bashnett reached the century mark on Monday, but people may know her better as “Ginga,” one-half of the viral duo known as “Gramma and Ginga.”

To celebrate the momentous occasion, Clarksburg mayor Cathy Goings surprised her with a quick visit Friday morning.

“We honored her today, we gave her roses and of course a big cookie, because we know how she likes sweets, and then we gave her one dollar for every year and a gift certificate to get her hair done,” Goings said. “So we just wanted to give back to her after she’s given so much back to her community.”

Ginga was born on Feb. 4, 1919, and friends and family said her volunteerism throughout the years has made Clarksburg a better place to live.
