A student medical organization at West Virginia University has began highlighting the importance of dance.
Tuesday afternoon, ‘Of the Mindful Physician’ held a meeting to discuss the impact of arts and humanities on healthcare.
Speakers included a researcher and a physical therapist who were former dancers. They discussed how dance can benefit people with Parkinson’s disease, tremors and other disorders that affect movement.
“So this meeting is just about the research and practice behind using principles of dance, not necessarily dance itself, when treating patients with those disorders that affect movement,” said Ogaga Urhie, president of ‘Of the Mindful Physician.’
Other meetings held by ‘Of the Mindful Physician’ group have covered Music Therapy, as well as Narrative Medicine, among other topics.
