Antique printing press demonstration given as part of Welsh May Day Festival

MORGANTOWN W.Va – Saturday morning an antique printing press demonstration was given at the Morgantown History Museum.

This was part of the two day Welsh May Day Festival.

A Platen Letter Press was used, which was invented in the 1800s.

The demonstration was performed by Harold Max Shaver who is a second generation printer.

His father had his start at Meryl’s Printing in Clarksburg.

“It’s a great way of preserving the printing press history which is changing constantly and newer technology has taken over,” said Shaver.

Shaver recalls Morgantown once having ten printing businesses operating at the same time many years ago. Right now there are only a few big printers in the area.
