Wednesday, Mylan Park shared its progress and updates on the new Aquatic and Track center.
This facility has been in the works since 2014 and is now nearing completion. The new track will be opening soon.
“State of the art facility, as with the aquatic center. It is a beautiful facility and is expected to open actually next week. We will have a soft opening and a ribbon cutting on October 26th,” said Keith Hernstrom, Executive Director of Mylan Park.
An open house for the community will be held for the track and field complex from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
The aquatic center will have many features, including a dive pool with six lanes, 50 meter competition pool, and a community pool.
“We will look at local, state, and regional athletic programs to host meets and competition out of the 50 meter aquatic facility, swimming and diving facility. We will also then offer community memberships and day pass opportunities for general recreation in the community pool,” said Hernstrom.
Mylan Park will also do programming that includes group and private swim lessons, first-aid and lifeguarding courses, school enrichment programs, birthday parties, and field trips.
This project will expand the staff at Mylan Park.
“We do expect 15 full time professional positions to come out of this project at Mylan Park as a whole. As well 150 to 175 part time positions,” said Hernstrom.
These positions include administrative, maintenance, and technical positions, along with lifeguards, front desk attendants, and other staff members for facility operations.
The bleachers in the aquatic center will seat 1,200 individuals which will accommodate crowds for Big Twelve Swimming and Diving Championships.
“The great thing is, is that that conversation happened early on in the planning and this facility was designed to be able to accommodate those requirements of the big twelve. We do anticipate that in 2020, will be the first year that we host the Big Twelve Swimming and Diving Championships here at Mylan Park,” said Hernstrom.
The aquatic center is expected to open in the fall of 2019.
