Beard growing contest begins at West Virginia University

The beard growing competition at West Virginia University has kicked off again.

Wednesday afternoon, contestants gathered in the Mountainlair to shave and start off with a “clean slate”.

Everyone has thirty days to grow one and put their best beard forward.

The beard shaving event was hosted by none other than the West Virginia University Mountaineer and the reigning Miss West Virginia.

The final beard judging event will be held on October 26 at the Mountainlair, during Mountaineer Week.

“I really have a fun time doing this and I love just coming out every year and being a part of something that feels like I’m a part of the university in a big way,” said  Davis Versprille, contestant.

The first beard growing competition was held all the way back in 1949, during the first Mountaineer Week.
