International President of the United Mine Workers of America, Cecil Roberts, held an informational conference Thursday at the Waterfront.
This event was held to discuss the union’s efforts to pass legislation in congress that will save pensions for more than 106,000 retired and active miners and widows.
There is growing concern around the 1974 pension plan, which may cause individuals to lose their benefits by 2023 if action is not taken by Congress.
“For a lot of us, it would mean that we would be without that money and to be able to run our households. And maybe not even have enough money to buy medicine or food. It’s a big deal for most of us. Our pensions average about 586 dollars a month,” said Dwayne Thomas, UMWA Member.
UMWA is encouraging local miners to support politicians in favor of the American Miners Act of 2019.
