NIOSH mobile health unit offers free screening for coal miners

Monongalia and Preston

A mobile health unit was at the Wal-Mart in Morgantown to provide free screening for local coal miners.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) offered free, confidential screening for current and retired miners.

The screenings could detect black lung, a common disease for miners, and were provided through a state of the art mobile testing unit.

“The goal of the mobile unit is to just help fill in where we don’t have NIOSH clinics You know we do have NIOSH clinics throughout the state this is also a way of miners being able to come out after clinic hours or when they can’t make it to the station,” said Melissa Yanchesky, acting coordinator

The next free screening will be tomorrow Kingwood Civic Center 9am to 6pm.
