The state auditor, John McCuskey, visited the Preston County Commission meeting Monday morning to present a government transparency website.
The auditor’s office is offering this to all 55 counties in the state so that citizens of each county can see how all of their tax dollars are being spent.
The state website, www.wvcheckbook.gov, was ranked the number one transparency site in the United States.
“It’s really a wonderful program that enables people to make informed decisions with their government and it helps governments to interact with their citizenry and say ‘hey, this is what we’re spending money on’. This is what we believe the priorities are and we want you to know, as soon as we do, how we’re spending your money,” said John McCuskey.
McCuskey says he expects all 55 counties jump on board with this program and within the next few years we will be a state where tax dollars can be tracked from beginning to end at the state, county, and city levels.
