The Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Committee considers changes to project list

Monongalia and Preston

Changes to the Metropolitan Transport Plan Project list is being considered by The Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Committee. The committee plans, prioritizes, and recommends transportation projects for funding and could add another project, improvements to Morgantown Industrial Park, to the list. With limited funding, this would effect other projects in the Monongalia County area. Members of the public had a chance to met with the committee and give their input on these proposed changes.

“The primary transportation plan is called our tier one projects and those are projects that are fiscally constrained. A new project has come up that would provided enhanced access to the Morgantown Industrial Park and its been proposed that that project be one of our Tier  one Projects,” said Bill Austin, executive director with MMPO.

Director Austin says it is a good plan that would improve access, limit truck traffic and provide for emergency services. But some say there are to many projects already and limited funds to go around.

“We currently have some very critical infrastructure projects on board with our programs right now including the university avenue corridor study,” said Matthew Cross, a committee member.

One member of the audience was on board with improving access to the area but felt it was a matter of prioritizing the funds.

“If the policy board decides to amend the priority list, it would be another candidate project for funding. There’s no guaranteed funding associated with this priority list, it’s simple an estimated budget and then we work with the department of transportation to get the project program for construction,” said Austin.

If adopted, the project would end up on the Tier 1 project list, taking the place of another and making it eligible for funding from the department of transportation. A board meeting will be held on January 17th to address the matter.
