West Virginia University is hosting the NCAA Rifle Championships for the first time ever.

Nearly 700 patrons turned out Friday for the event. About 1,000 tickets have been sold for Saturday. More tickets have been pre-sold for this event than in any other city that has hosted the championship.

WVU Rifle team coach, Jon Hammond, is hoping to top 2,000 spectators for the two day event.

One of the marquee student athletes in the event is Ginny Thrasher, a gold medalist for the U.S. Olympic Team.

“We encourage everyone to come out. Obviously, everyone knows of the history of this program, all of the national championships that we’ve won. So, to have it here in Morgantown, West Virginia for the first time, it’s a great chance to come out and support the rifle team as they go for another national championship,” said Nathaniel Zinn, WV Assistant Athletics Director.

Gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday and tickets can be purchased at the Coliseum ticket office for $10.00.
