Perhaps nothing goes better with your morning cup of coffee than something that is a little bit sweet and Byrd’s House of Donuts in downtown Elkins has everything your sweet tooth fix needs.

Father and son, Tommy and Thomas Byrd, opened the doors to the donut shop nearly two years ago and haven’t looked back.

“I’ve always wanted to own my own business. The donut business was sort of by accident, but now that I’m in it, I really, really like it,” said Tommy Byrd.

The family-run business has been a huge success since moving to Davis Avenue in downtown Elkins and owners plan to grow the business for years to come.

“We hope that in 10 years that we are still here, 20 years we’re still here, and someday my grandkids will be running it. We want this to be here in Elkins forever,” continued Tommy Byrd.

The Byrd men said the secret to the shop’s success is making everything from scratch. Each ring is hand-dipped and each shell is filled with cream made from scratch, and with more than 30 flavors to choose from, you can’t go wrong.

“We do everything here.  We hand-dip the glaze; we make all of our cream fillings, our frostings, our glazes.  It’s about a four-hour process from start to finish. It can be quite a process, but it is also rewarding, as well,” said Tommy Byrd.

Donuts are made daily and are gone before you know it.  Owners said they are eager to grow the business to include more bakery items and would eventually like to expand into more locations.

“It’s probably a lot harder and more work to work for yourself, but it’s a lot more rewarding,” said Tommy Bryd.

With more than 30 unique flavors and rings made to order, you are sure to find something that’s just the right amount of sweet.
