MERCER COUNTY, WV (WVNS) – Crews with the Division of Highways in Mercer County use hot asphalt in the winter to fill potholes; however, not every county is lucky enough to have access to hot asphalt. Potholes can then cause a lot of damage to cars.

Keith Bailey is the owner of Bailey’s Auto and Repair. He said pothole damage is very common this time of year.

“We see damaged tires, bent wheels, the front end suspension product all damaged,” Bailey explained.

He also said car maintenance is not cheap.

“Some of these wheels you spend anywhere from 3 to 5 hundred dollars just on a wheel alone,” Bailey said.

But there is a way to get reimbursed when you hit a pothole on a state highway. David Harber, the District Manager for the DOH in Mercer County, said people can go through the state’s Court of Claims to get reimbursed for the damage.

Harber said it is a lot like filing an insurance claim.

“Of course everyone has cell phones, so go ahead and take a picture of the damaged tire and if the rim gets damaged as well. Then go in and get the estimate, have the repairs done, and make sure to get a copy of the invoice,” Harber said.

Harber said to be patient when dealing with reimbursement through the Court of Claims because all claims have to go through legislature to get approved.
