Fairmont City Council candidate wins race after election recount tiebreaker

The race for the Fairmont City Council 5th District seat went to a recount after Houston Richardson initially lost to Barry Bledsoe by one vote during the initial election.

Before Tuesday’s recount, election officials found an uncounted email ballot that was misplaced during canvassing that evened the race.

Richardson and Bledsoe agreed to the tiebreaker, rather than Richardson requesting additional recounts, in which a candidate’s name was put on a different button.  The buttons were then put into a coffee can, shaken, and turned over. The winner was determined when just one name came out face up.

“It’s drawn by lot is what’s in the code, and they can decide what they want to do.  Whether they want to draw names out of a hat, whether they want to draw straws, uh, we came up with using the buttons that are actually used election day, and he came out the winner,” said Cecelia Donato, Marion County Deputy Clerk.

Richardson will take office in January.
