The Fairmont City Council put up a major resolution to vote Tuesday evening.
The resolution would decide whether or not the intersection of Benoni Avenue and Fifth Street up to the intersection of Benoni and Kirk Way would be permanently closed to make way for a Greenway Trail for walking, biking, nature trips and scientific study. The public who showed up to speak at the meeting was largely against the closure.
Council voted down the closure after an 8-2 vote, with one abstaining vote.
“I wanted to see it budgeted and on paper before voting on it, and that’s what I attempted to do by trying to table the motion for this meeting so that we could get more solid plans in place to ensure the safety of everybody that uses that thruway,” said councilman Robert Linger.
The issue will be revisited by council in roughly six to nine months.
