From the sunshine, to the carnival rides and to the live band music, Palatine Park is the perfect place to be, as residents come together to celebrate Independence Day.
“There’s lots of food vendors here today. You can get about anything that you can imagine, like funnel cakes and corn dogs, drinks, lemonade all that. Then there is also the carnival going on up above. There’s six or eight rides that kids can ride and the splash park is open all day too so you can keep the kids cooled off.” said MCPARC events director, John Provins.
With musicians like Top Shelf and Michael Lowry performing, residents said spending time and entertaining each other is what the 4th is all about.
“We go over to some friends’ house for the 4th of July and we spend the day over there. That’s about it for me because I am getting too old.” Marine veteran, Herbert Holmes laughingly stated.
“It means so much to my father who fought and so many friends that fought for our freedom over the years and he was in Korea, but I had most of my friends in Vietnam and I was too young for that, but it means what we gave and they all gave everything to have this independence.” said Fairmont resident, Tomy Thompson.
“To have this many people come together having fun, this is a celebration like the country was famous for a hundred years ago. They just came together and made up their own fun and that’s a lot of what this is today.” said Provins.
Events started to kick off right at 6pm and will be going into the night, ending with a grand finale firework display starting at 10 pm.
