As communities are preparing for cookouts this holiday week, fire departments are wanting you to remain safe and alert when grilling for the 4th of July.
Fairmont Fire Department safety officer, David Perkins says that the there are three main steps to reducing a fire while grilling.
” Number one rule for reducing a fire while grilling is to stay close and keep an eye on all products when they are on a open flame. Also, keep your cooking device at least 10 feet away from any structure. That is just a safety precaution that is in the NFPA code. That is something that we like to spread around. Also keep children at least 3 feet away from your cooking device. That keeps them from getting into open flames or any grease that may spread out from the cooking itself.” said Perkins.
