PC&TC and WVU Extension Services partner together to create oil and gas safety specialist program

Pierpont Community and Technical College is hitting the ground running in 2019, as the campus partners with the WVU Extension Service to offer Oil and Gas Safety Specialist Programs.

The dual partnership will make it the only program of its kind to be hosted in the city of Fairmont, as the program will provide individuals with the knowledge, skills and credential to advance their careers within the oil and gas industry.

“The main drivers for a partnering with WVU on both ends was to bring these courses here to Fairmont. They are in Morgantown, they’re other areas of the state, but we did not have anything here in Fairmont, and we have this wonderful building, Advance Technology Center, purposely for industry training and OSHA courses,” said Tracey Kennedy, Program Manager of Work Force Development at PC&TC.

Through the program, participants will learn safety and health management, OSHA standards and record keeping, hydrogen sulfide awareness, electric safety and other skills to give a hands-on real world experience for their set career path.

“This course is great for those who are already working in [the] industry. So if you are already in the oil and gas industry, it’s a way to kind of build your resume, building your skills up, it could help with advancement. If you are looking to get into oil and gas, or you’re just starting, this is a great way that can help you get hired,” said Kennedy.

The 60 credited hour coursework will focus in upstream, downstream and midstream sectors of the oil and gas industry to prepare students to be ready for company-use once the program is completed.

“We really feel like we are meeting a need, an industry need, and the hope and the goal is that we’ll just continue to build on these and throughout the year we’ll have even more courses available, ” Kennedy said.

Pierpont will be offering further OSHA programs. after this semester with a 25% discount for those looking to register in all courses.
