Memorial Day brings crowds to local marinas

Memorial Day is a time when many people make their way out to the docks to get their boats out on the water for the first time this year.

This brings a lot of business to both the Cheat Lake and Sunset Beach marinas in Morgantown.
There are 600 privately-owned boats at the Cheat Lake Marina and it brings nearly 1,200 people through each day to the Crab Shack Caribba.

The Sunset Beach Marina rents out pontoons, along with non-motorized options like kayaks and canoes.

The marina owner said Memorial Day is when business really picks up for boating season.

“Memorial Day is a big surge. It’s the first kick-off basically of all of the marinas in the area, but we’re always busy, every Saturday we are just, if the weather is good, we are just stomped. But today will be a madhouse,” said Barry Frey, owner of Sunset Beach Marina.

Owners said that guests describe the time on the water as a vacation without leaving town.
