Extra officers will be on patrol across the United States through June 3, looking for those who do not buckle up.

This week is National Seat Belt awareness week, which was started by the ‘Click it or Ticket’ Campaign. This is a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign aimed at increasing the use of seat belts among drivers across the country.

“Nobody can bench press the pressure that you have and the weight that you would be going forward if you were involved in an accident. And also it keeps you back from your airbag when it deploys. A lot of people are hurt by airbags because they get too close because they are not wearing their seatbelt. They believe just because they have airbags, they will be alright,” said Captain Matt McCabe of the Morgantown Police Department.

Seat belts were credited with saving 14,668 lives in 2016, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
