(WTRF) – With winter weather already affecting West Virginians this year, AAA wants to remind everyone to drive carefully while traveling in severe weather.

A new report released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety said 46 percent of all accidents involving weather happen during the winter months.

The report said it’s due to the fact that weather events in the winter are more difficult to drive in. Winter storms, bad weather and sloppy road conditions are a factor i nnearly half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths each year.

  • Increase your following distance
  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly
  • Know your brakes
  • Don’t stop if you can avoid it

AAA said if follow these steps, you should be able to get to your destination safetly.
