Voters are heading to the polls for early voting in Barbour County ahead of the May 8 primary election. For this election, voters are choosing candidates within their chosen parties and making selections ahead of the general election in November.

In Barbour County, four candidates are vying for three board of education positions.  Current Board Vice President Joanna McConnell and Board Member David Everson will be running against newcomer Ronald Phillips.  It is important to know that Belington Mayor Matt Ryan is listed on the ballot but has dropped out of the race.

Running for Barbour County Commission on the Democratic ticket are newcomers Stephen Cross and Cindy Hart.  Stephen Cross is the owner of Cross Cabinet & Furniture Company in Philippi, and Cindy Hart has been working in Randolph County as the Office of Emergency Management Director for the last several years.

And on the Republican ticket incumbent Commissioner, Phil Hart will be running against newcomer James Carpenter.  Dr. James Carpenter wants to use his position to address issues with the county’s senior citizen population.  Bridgeport Fire Captain Phil Hart plans to serve the county by tackling the county’s war on drugs.

It is worth noting that Commissioner Phil Hart is the brother-in-law of opponent Cindy Hart.  If both Hart candidates win in the primary, they will be facing off in November’s general election.
