There is a move under way that could lead to the impeachment of West Virginia’s Supreme Court Chief Justice, Allen Loughry. He and the rest of the high court have come under heavy public criticism for lavish office renovations which cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Loughry’s personal office has a couch that cost more than $30,000.
Lawmakers said in the meantime, key public programs like drug courts have had their budgets cut. A legislative investigation could lead to the Chief Justice being removed from office.
“There have been cuts to reimbursements to guardians-ad-litem; several other programs that have been cut. And if you look at that next to a $35,000 couch, it’s pretty hard for the taxpayers to stomach,” said Kanawha County Del. Mike Pushkin (D).
Delegate Pushkin added that the House judiciary committee should lead the investigation that could end up with impeachment. On Friday, January 12, 2018 the House finance committee will be investigating the Supreme Court’s budget.
