ROWLESBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Preston County Sheriff’s Office Monday announced that it has concluded its investigation into the man who was found dead in the Cheat River back in May.

The man’s remains were pulled from the river on Friday, May 20 by a dive team. The Sheriff’s Office later identified the remains as 44-year-old Thomas Harris of Oakland, MD.

In a Facebook post Monday, the Preston County Sheriff’s Office said it found Harris’ vehicle over an embankment near the Cheat River on Friday, Aug. 12, and after an investigation, it determined that Harris drove over the embankment, exited the vehicle, and ended up falling victim to the Cheat River.

“The Preston County Sheriff’s Office wishes to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Harris,” the post reads.

The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, WV Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, WV Natural Resources Police, West Virginia State Police, WV Army National Guard Aviation, Rowlesburg Volunteer Fire Department, Rowlesburg Ambulance Service, KAMP Ambulance, Preston County Dive Team, Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department, Masontown Volunteer Fire Department, the WV FUSION Center, and the Preston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office all assisted in the investigation.

ROWLESBURG, W.Va. — The Preston County Sheriff’s Department is asking the public for information about a man who was found dead in the Cheat River.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, the deceased was Thomas Harris. He was recovered from the Cheat River near the George Washington Highway Bridge in Rowlesburg on May 20. 

Law enforcement are now looking for information from the public in the investigation of Harris’ death. According to the release, he was a 44-year-old black man, that stood 6’2” tall and weighed 210lbs. He also had multiple tattoos. 

The release also stated that Harris had previously been a resident of Oakland, Maryland, and was known to drive a 2007 bronze Dodge Caliber, Maryland registration 8EZ1422.
