STORM RECAP: Ida remnants in north-central West Virginia

News

Scott Jones, Tunnelton

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. – Remnants of what was Hurricane Ida dropped torrential tropical rains across north-central West Virginia.

There was devastating flooding across the Tygart River Valley from Preston County down to Barbour and Upshur counties.

Rains washed out roadways, flooded homes and basements, as well as let creeks and streams overflow their banks.

The heaviest rain fell along and east of I-79 with rainfall estimates that contained communities that saw more than than two-to-four inches of precipitation since Monday.

Here are some rainfall totals within north-central West Virginia reported by the National Weather Service in Charleston, W.Va., from the remnants of what once was Hurricane Ida.

The onset of rain caused the flow in the Blackwater River near Davis to become rapid.

It turned out to be a lovely view in Blackwater Falls State Park.

However, it wasn’t lovely across all of north-central West Virginia. Barbour County saw flooded roadways and fields in Independence.

Flooding was also spotted by the Mount Liberty Bridge in Barbour County.

Preston County also bore the brunt of the flooding with flooding in Tunnelton.

Manheim, near Rowlesburg, also saw some flooding activity.

Durbin, in Pocahontas County, also saw flooded roadways and fields.

In addition – Ten Mile, near Tallmansville and Buckhannon in Upshur County, saw flooded roadways as residents had to detour throughout the community.

By the end of the day when the rains came to a close, a landslide occurred in Morgantown by the Waterfront Marriott along Don Knotts Boulevard.
