A recent study has been released that details the most and least educated states in America, and West Virginia has found itself near the bottom of the list.
The personal finance website WalletHub released a study titled ‘2019’s Most & Least Educated States in America,’ by comparing all 50 U.S. states across 20 total metrics. Some of these metrics include university quality, highest/lowest percentage of high school diploma holders and gender gap in educational attainment, among others. The metrics were then grouped into two categories, and ‘Educational Attainment’ rank and a ‘Quality of Education’ rank. Each state was then given a total score.
This study found West Virginia ranked as the 49th ‘Most Educated State,’ or as the 2nd ‘Least Educated State.’ West Virginia ranked in last place at 50 in the ‘Educational Attainment’ rank and at 42 in the ‘Quality of Education’ rank. Only one state, Mississippi, was ranked below West Virginia in this study.
West Virginia’s total score was 21.02, just 1.7 ahead of Mississippi which had a total score of 19.32 in last place. The state that ranked first in the study was Massachusetts, which ranked first in both ‘Educational Attainment’ and ‘Quality of Education.’
