The U.S Army Corps of Engineers will provide a space to recycle unheeded trees, as
the Christmas Tree Recycling Program will use all trees for fish attractor projects at Tygart Lake to save landfill space and improve fish habitats.
“The reason why we collect Christmas trees this time of year is, the lake when it falls and rises we lose vegetation, so what we do is we will put Christmas trees back into the lake as an alternate for vegetative structure for fish habitat.” said Tom Handy, park ranger for Tygart Lake.
To be suitable for fish attractor projects, trees should be free of decorations. Please remove all tinsel, ornaments, lights, garland, stands and plastic bags from the tree. Artificial or flocked trees (artificial snow) cannot be accepted because they pose a hazard to wildlife. Loose limbs that have not been pruned from trees or used for making garlands also cannot be accepted.
A collection site will be outside of the Tygart Lake office trees are scheduled to be anchored in the lake by February 2.
