US Army Corps of Engineers collect Christmas trees

As you get ready to take down Christmas decorations, consider dropping off your live tree with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tygart Dam.

If you have a tree you would like to donate, drop it off without decorations at Tygart Dam behind the concessions area.

The Christmas Tree Recycling Program helps keep trees out of landfills.

The trees are used in the lake as an artificial reef for fish.

“So the fish are always looking for protection, and since our lake drops and falls every summer we don’t have much growth in there. So the only thing they have is rocks. These trees in there, it gives them a place to hide basically, gives them an area to grow,” said Thomas Handy, park ranger.

Officials said a park ranger can arrange to pick up multiple trees for those with larger quantities.
