The Tucker County Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) and Tucker County Commission are working together to educate the community about the hotel/motel tax, specifically the costs of renting property on popular sites like AirBnB and Vacation Rental by Owner.
In 2017, Davis, Tucker County was visited by more than 5,000 visitors who were renting AirBnB locations, earning $547,000. Members of the community were listing rental properties but not charging the county’s six percent hotel/motel tax.
“Our hope is, working with the county commission and the municipalities, to educate the community that if you are using this platform, like AirBnB, it is your responsibility to not only collect a six percent sales tax but also a six percent hotel/motel tax,” said Tucker County CVB Executive Director Jessica Waldo.
Officials said tourism communities and counties are affected the most. The Tucker County Commission will be discussing the issue during Wednesday’s regular session.
