White Grass Touring Center in Tucker County has a unique way of collecting snow to cover trails during the winter season.
Snow farming is a delicate process of catching the light and heavy powder along fences which is groomed to cover ski trails. Nature plays a large part in the process, and even minor snowstorms can produce a heavy snowpack.
“We put up fences that catch the snow. It actually slows the wind down so the snow can fall on the backside of the fence. Between nature and little hollows and low places, where the snow will drift anyway, we will put up fences to go to the next one,” said Chip Chase, owner.
During times with lots of heavy snowfall and wind, the fences can save up snow to cover more than 30 miles of trails.
