High valleys and scenic views are just a few of the things offered at Canaan Valley Resort State Park.
Park Superintendent Don McFarlan said the valley is known for its beautiful hiking and scenery.
“Canaan Valley is the highest valley of this size east of the Mississippi River,” said McFarlan.
Canaan Valley Resort State Park is known for having some of the best views in the region while hiking but these sights can also be seen from a less strenuous route.
“This is absolutely one of the best views in West Virginia. Our base elevation is 3,200 feet, and when you get on top of the mountain at Bald Knob or ski area, it’s just awesome views of the entire surrounding areas,” said McFarlan.
The near five-star resort and state park offers adventures that cannot be found anywhere else in the state.
Recreation Attendant Lucas Bast said the newest adventure excursion offered at the state park is the the Resort Boards, which are much similar to Segways only much faster and easier to maneuver.
“It’s an electric device that you ride on and you use your body weight to lean and turn and they go between six and 12 miles an hour depending on what you’re in,” said Bast. “It’s fun to watch because most people haven’t ever seen anything like these before. They didn’t know they existed. they might know what Segways are, but these are completely different.”
Along with scenic views and Resort Boards, Canaan Valley offers a variety of four-season outdoor activities.
“Here at the recreation center itself, we have the miniature golf, climbing wall and the bungee, we have the outdoor pool and we have the indoor pool and arcade in the main lodge,” said Bast.
“Winter time we have our skiing, which is very, very popular in this area. So we are just an all around good place to come and enjoy what state parks in West Virginia have to offer,” said McFarlan.
Canaan Valley Resort State Park is open seven days a week and offers all summer activities from now until labor day.
