Veterans from all branches of the military and all over the country headed out to Tucker County for a day full of winter recreation.
Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area hosted the Gathering of Mountain Eagles to give veterans a day to enjoy the snow.
“Our entire purpose, our mission is to provide recreational activity for wounded warriors and veterans of all means, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, here, and this is our way of saying thank you very much,” said Gathering of Mountain Eagles Executive Director Paul Derkow.
Gathering of the Mountain Eagles is an organization that gives back to our wounded warriors. Canaan Valley Ski Patrol and Davis & Elkins College Student Association of Veterans paired with the veterans to spend the day learning to ski and snowboard down the slopes.
“I come from a big military family, and I kind of know the sacrifices that they make every day, the service members. So to come up here and spend the day giving back to them, even if it’s a small thing as skiing, I think it’s just a really great thing to be a part of,” said D&E College Students Association of Veterans member Makeia Jonese.
Skiing is just one of many outdoor recreation activities Gathering of Mountain Eagles sponsors to get veterans up and out of the house. This year’s event brought 24 warriors to the slopes.
“I think it is a really fun and healthy way to go out there and connect with other veterans and make some really great memories together, help each other out and have a great time,” said Army Veteran Gail Schnell.
