UPDATE: Holgorsen officially leaves WVU

After eight seasons, former head coach takes over same position at Houston

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Dana Holgorsen is no longer West Virginia’s head football coach, and a national search is underway to find his replacement.

WVU athletic director Shane Lyons confirmed Holgorsen’s departure in a statement Wednesday. He thanked Holgorsen for his eight years at WVU, in which he compiled a 61-41 record.

“We wish him and his family all the best at the University of Houston,” said Lyons in the statement. “Our national search to find his replacement has already begun, and I know it will be a successful one.”

Holgorsen’s move to Houston was rumored and expected for days. Houston received permission to contact Holgorsen about its coaching vacancy Monday, a day after it fired former head coach Major Applewhite.

Holgorsen was an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Houston from 2008-2009. He will be introduced as the program’s 15th head coach during a press conference Thursday.
