Upshur Arts Alliance’s held its third annual spelling bee fundraiser.
This is a team based spelling bee including 16 teams of four spellers with a judge at every table.
In order to participate the teams paid a one-hundred-dollar fee with all proceeds going toward the arts and culture in Upshur County.
At the beginning of the bee the teams start with four balloons and are given 30 seconds to collaborate and spell out each given word.
The Vice President of Upshur Arts Alliance, Elizabeth Spencer, says the balloons are the deciding factor in this competition.
“They brainstorm as a unit to decide what’s the best spelling they can offer for their answer, and they have a chance to spell it correctly and keep all their balloons,” Spencer said. “If they spell it incorrectly one of their balloons gets popped by their judge.”
When a team’s balloons have all been popped they then have the option to either accept their losses or buy an extra balloon for $25 to stay in the game.
The team with the last balloon standing went home with a $50 gift card to a local restaurant.
This is one of several fundraising events put on by Upshur Arts Alliance every year.
