CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – Officials in West Virginia are warning that any attempt to meddle in the 2020 election will be taken seriously and potentially prosecuted.
U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart and Secretary of State Mac Warner on Tuesday hosted a news conference on election security and announced a federal probe into attempted tampering. Warner said there was an attempted hack into the voting app for deployed military members and their families during last year’s elections.
Stuart says in a news release that the integrity of the votes and the election system wasn’t compromised during the attempted hack. Stuart and Warner said information on the would-be hackers has been forwarded to the FBI, which is leading an investigation into whether any federal laws were violated.
