White Hall town council gathered Monday evening to discuss increasing its sales tax from half a percent to a full one percent.
Three council members voted to not move forward with the increase while four others voted in favor of the increase. The town attorney has been advised to draft an ordinance; it takes three readings before potential passage. Mayor, Guy Ward said that with all the increases that the towns budget could increase to a potential of approximately three million dollars.
“We’ve got, we’ve got a lot of revenue projected for the future without even increasing our sales tax. If we annex this area behind the mall that we’re anticipating annexing it will bring in extra property tax,” said Ward.
Mayor Ward stated that the Middletown Mall being renovated will also bring in extra sales tax dollars as well. If there’s passage of all three readings, the proposed increase to the ordinance will be sent to the county tax commissioner’s office. The increase could potentially take place January 1, 2020.
