WVU football player cited for having a gun outside high school basketball game

UPDATE:

West Virginia University’s Athletic’s Department tell 12 News they are aware of the incident with Derrek Pitts and are handling the matter internally. Pitts is listed as a Safety on the WVU football team for the 2017 season.

Charleston Police released the following statement:

Derrek Pitts,19, of South Charleston was issued a summons on Saturday January 6, 2018 at 1900 hours for carrying a concealed weapon under the age of twenty-one on the parking lot of George Washington High School.

Authorities tell 12 News that West Virginia University football player was cited for having a gun at a high school basketball game Saturday night. 

Derrek Pitts, a South Charleston native, was attending the George Washington High School versus South Charleston High School basketball game, police said. 

He was cited for having a concealed weapon on school property while being under the age of 21. 

Pitts is 19 years old, according to court documents. 

The incident took place in the parking lot of George Washington High School in Charleston around 7 p.m.
